INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTIONS

Unsalted Butter – I use Kerry Gold for all my frosting recipes but feel free to use any that you like. I haven’t tried this recipe with vegan butter, but for a dairy-free option, you can try this substitution.

Powdered Sugar – All classic frostings call for powdered sugar to sweeten and thicken the frosting.

Heavy Cream – for frosting recipes, you will want to use whole milk or heavy cream for the perfect consistency. You can even use half and half if that’s all you have on hand.

Vanilla Bean Paste – I’m a big fan of vanilla bean paste, and the one I use is from Amazon and it lasts me for months. If you don’t have bean paste, vanilla extract is totally fine as an alternative.

Pumpkin Pie Spice – the pumpkin pie spice gives the cinnamon frosting that extra boost of spice and compliments the cinnamon so well. Feel free to create your own blend using a combination of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and ginger.

HOW TO MAKE CINNAMON FROSTING

Step 1
In a mixing bowl, add the softened, room-temperature butter. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the mixture until it becomes light and creamy.

Step 2
Gradually add the powdered sugar to the whipped butter mixture. Mix on low speed initially to avoid a powdered sugar cloud, then increase to medium-high speed until well combined.

Step 3
Add in the heavy cream and vanilla bean paste and continue to mix until the frosting reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.

Step 4
Sprinkle in the pumpkin pie spice and ground cinnamon. Mix again until all the spices are evenly distributed, and the frosting takes on a warm tan color.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • Ensure the butter is softened but not melted for the best texture for your frosting.
  • Adjust the thickness of the frosting by adding more powdered sugar for a stiffer consistency or a touch more cream for a lighter texture.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of salt, nutmeg, or a drizzle of maple syrup.
  • If you want to kick up the flavors even more, add some brown sugar for a play on cinnamon brown sugar frosting.

What to frost with cinnamon frosting

This cinnamon frosting is incredibly versatile. Use it to frost cupcakes, cakes, or cookies. Spread it generously on cinnamon rolls or use it as a filling between cake layers for a delightful surprise.

Cinnamon Frosting

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 4 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste
  • 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, blend softened butter and vanilla bean paste until it's light and fluffy. Use a hand mixer or a stand mixer for that extra fluffiness.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar to the butter mixture. Start slow to avoid a sugary explosion, then crank up the speed until it's all beautifully combined.
  • Pour in the heavy cream, and keep mixing until your frosting reaches a smooth and creamy consistency.
  • Sprinkle in the pumpkin pie spice and ground cinnamon. Mix it up until the spices are all cozy with the frosting, giving it that warm, inviting color.
  • That's it! Your cinnamon frosting is ready to spread joy on cupcakes, cakes, or whatever sweet masterpiece you've got going.
